Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Firoz Cachalia, today unveiled the new looking fleet vehicle for the Gauteng Traffic Police in a ceremony held at the Boukenhoutkloof Traffic Training College , West of Pretoria.
The Gauteng Traffic Police are part of the Department of Community Safety.
The introduction of this new fleet of vehicles is in line with the Provincial Road Safety Strategy which seeks to reduce road deaths in Gauteng by 30% over a five year period while ensuring the general safety of people on the roads. To achieve this, high visibility of law enforcement agencies on the roads becomes imperative which is, nevertheless, one of the key strategic thrusts in the implementation of the Provincial Road Safety Strategy.
New Fleet
This new fleet consists of 17 brand new 2.0 litre Golf GTIs that will be utilised by Provincial High Speed Unit. These vehicles are fitted with on-board speed measuring equipment as well as an eye-witness technology which will record every interaction between traffic officers and motorists.
An initial batch of 16 brand new 4x2 bakies to be used by the Freight and Transport Unit that will also enable officers to easily access often inaccessible roads were also unveiled. To ensure that national and provincial roads are consistently monitored, 104 VW Jettas were unveiled for highway patrol.
With this newly acquired fleet the Department's crime fighting strategy, which prioritises cooperation and coordinated of law enforcement agencies including Metropolitan Police Departments, the South African Police Service and Local Traffic Authorities, will be easy to implement and thus go a long way in reducing crime levels in the province.
Speaking at the launching event, MEC Cachalia said with the new fleet the Department will be able to maximize its impact on traffic law enforcement as well heighten visibility in an effort to reduce the number of fatalities by 30%.
