ELEVEN  MOTORISTS ARRESTED FOR SPEEDING, RECKLESS AND NEGLIGENT DRIVING OVER WEEKEND

The Gauteng Traffic Police of the Department of Community Safety arrested eleven motorists over the weekend for traffic violations ranging from speeding, reckless and negligent and driving under the influence of alcohol.  One motorist collided with another vehicle, but no serious injuries were sustained by either driver.

For speeding, a white BMW was caught driving 186 km per hour, another 196km per hour with an Audi, both along N4 Rustenburg freeway.

Both suspects were detained at the Akasia Police station and later released on bail, and are due to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate Court.

Along  the N4 Witbank, an Audi driver was driving 206km per hour, a Mercedes Benz 194km per hour, Toyota driving 101km per hour, while one minibus drove 132km per hour on a 60km per hour zone, and another minibus 105km per hour  on a 60km zone.  All suspects were detained and released on bail.  They are due to appear at the Kungwini Magistrate court today on charge of speeding.

Along the R21, two motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.  They were detained and later released on bail at the Littleton Police station.  They are due to appear at the Littleton Magistrate court today, facing charges of drinking and driving.

In a separate incident, a Honda motorcyclist was arrested for reckless and negligent driving after his Honda drove on rear wheel and was speeding.  Upon attempts to stop the motorcyclist, he sped off and was cornered next to the Nissan factory in Rosslyn.    The Gauteng Traffic Police impounded the motorcycle as it had no number plates, no disc and no proof of registration.  He was detained at the Akasia police station and will appear today at the Pretoria North police station.

These arrests are in line with the Gauteng Road Safety strategy that has already exceeded a 30% reduction in road accidents and fatalities over the past five years.

Motorists are urged to drive safety, as cases of reckless, negligent, speeding and drinking under the influence of alcohol put other motorists in danger.  Law enforcers will act decisively on these cases in order to ensure safety of our roads.
