NOT EMBARGOED

Provincial government hails foiling of heist

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Khabisi Mosunkutu, has congratulated the South African Police Services (SAPS) for swiftly preventing the commission of a cash-in-transit heist in Kameelfontein in Tshwane yesterday.

MEC Mosunkutu said that this action would 'send a strong message to other would be robbers' that the commission of any of the trio crimes is an unrewarding gamble with life itself. Trio crimes include aggravated bank and house robberies as well as vehicles/trucks hijackings. The Gauteng Provincial government has prioritized, as part of its strategic goals, the fight against trio crimes.

The provincial government is determined to ensure that the implementation of its Aggravated Robbery Strategy bears results as quickly as possible. Elements of the strategy, which includes the profiling of criminals, intelligence backed tracing teams and community support are now seeing information being provided to law enforcement agencies which allows the police to accurately anticipate incidents.

The MEC further warned that the combat readiness of SAPS to root out violent crime cannot be matched by the most vicious of criminals, and that incidents like yesterday's will greet any body thinking of committing a trio crime.
