MEC warns of hard-hitting actions against the taxi industry

MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng, Khabisi Mosunkutu, has condemned the attacks on two BRT busses in Soweto last night. The MEC is confident that the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to book.

The MEC further calls upon the leadership of the taxi industry, not just individuals, to condemn the acts and commit themselves to co-operate with law enforcement agencies in the hunting, identification and arrest of perpetrators of this dastardly act. Leaders of the industry who incite violence and hatred through utterances in the media might also find themselves facing incitement charges.

The provincial government is considering stern action which may include, but not limited to, temporarily halting taxi operations in Soweto and Johannesburg.

The MEC further calls upon those individuals who were searched for last night to hand themselves over to the police.

The MEC would like to reassure the public of the safety of our public transport system and that the provincial government will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the provision of a safe, reliable and affordable public transport system.
